Once part of St Helena Parish, Livingston Parish was split on February 10,1832 and with it came Springfield. With establishments well in advance of the incorporation Springfield was the center of commercial and family enterprises. Springfield became incorporated March 12, 1838, taking the parish seat from Van Buren (Springville) in 1835 and staying the parish seat until 1872. Her court house still stands today marking the proof of her historical province.
